How to generate additional logging for the Transformation Designer?

This article outlines how to enable additional logging for troubleshooting issues related to Transformation Designer. It includes steps for TA versions prior to 8 and updated steps for TA version 8 and above.

Solution

The Transformation Designer log files are located in the user temp area; - %root%\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\Temp/.   This article outlines how you can enable additional logging if you are required to troubleshoot an issue relating to Transformation Designer.

How to Enable Additional Logging?

For TA Versions Prior to 8:

Open the .ProjectBuilder.exe.config file located under:<InstallDirectory>\\TotalAgility\Transformation Designer\. 

Add the following to the <system.diagnostics> section:

Restart the Transformation Designer.

Replicate the issue.

Review the TransConf_tracing_output.svclog log file.

For TA Version 8+ and 2026.x:

In TA version 8 and above, the logging configuration has changed. Follow these updated steps:

Open the .ProjectBuilder.exe.config file located under:<InstallDirectory>\\TotalAgility\Transformation Designer\.

Update or add the following section under <system.diagnostics>:

  </sharedListeners>
  <switches>
    <add name="switch1" value="Verbose" />
  </switches>
</system.diagnostics>

Restart the Transformation Designer.

Replicate the issue.

Review the TransConf_tracing_output.svclog log file.

For TA Version 2025.x:

You can enable logging by following these steps:

1. 1 - Open the configuration file located at \Program Files (x86)\Tungsten\TotalAgility\ProjectBuilder.exe.config.
2. 2 - In the configuration file, locate the following section:

       <add key="LogLevel" value="Debug" />
       <add key="LogPath" value="C:\Temp" />
       <add key="PurgeDays" value="5" />
     </logSettings>
   

1. 3 - To enable logging set the EnableLogging value to "true".
2. 4 - Set the LogLevel value to one of the following values:

   • Debug (Default) - records fine-grained informational events that you can use to troubleshoot and debug the application.

   • Error - records error events that may allow the application to continue running.

   • Info - Records informational messages that highlight the progress of the application at a detailed level.

   • Warning - Records potentially harmful situations.

3. 5- Set the LogPath value to a location where you want to store the logs. (Default: C:\Temp)
4. 6 - Set the PurgeDays value to the number of days to retain the log files. (Default: 5)
5. 7 - Save the configuration file.

   Each time a project is opened, a new log file is created with the following naming format:

   Tungsten_PB_YYYY_MM_DD_HH24.MI.SE-UniqueID.txt, where HH24 is the hour in 24-hour format, MI is the minute, and SE is the seconds.

   For example, Tungsten_PB_2024-10-14_14.57.49-20196.txt.

   8 - Restart the Transformation Designer.

   9 - Replicate the issue.

   10 - Review the log files generated

When to use this feature?

If you experiencing errors when loading the Transformation Designer or within the Transformation Designer, enable additional logging when replicating the behaviour, and review the output of the error log.

Notes

• If the log file is not being created, ensure you run Transformation Designer as Administrator.
• The log file for TA version 8+ should be located in the same directory as the .ProjectBuilder.exe.config file.
• This logging method is compatible with TA version 7.4 and above, with updated steps for version 8+.
